DLC Coating

/PHONETIC/

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating is a thin, diamond-hard film applied to watch components, offering exceptional scratch resistance and a distinctive black finish.

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is a thin, extremely hard coating applied to watch cases and bracelets to create a dark, scratch-resistant surface. It is applied in a vacuum chamber using physical vapour deposition (PVD). DLC coatings are significantly harder than the steel underneath, though they can chip on sharp impacts. The finish gives a matte black or anthracite look that is popular on sporty and tactical watches. It is not the same as PVD, though the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Frequently asked.

What is DLC coating on watches?

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating is an ultra-hard carbon-based film rated 7-9 on the Mohs scale, providing exceptional scratch resistance. Applied via PVD process, it creates a distinctive matte black or dark grey finish while being hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant. Popular on tool watches and tactical pieces.

Does DLC coating wear off?

DLC is extremely durable and wear-resistant, lasting years under normal use. However, deep scratches or impacts can penetrate the thin coating (typically 1-5 microns), exposing the base metal beneath. Once damaged, DLC cannot be easily reapplied without returning to the manufacturer for professional refinishing.

Can you polish DLC coated watches?

No, polishing removes the DLC coating entirely. The coating is harder than polishing compounds but thinner than the base metal, so any abrasive polishing will wear through it. DLC watches should only be cleaned with soft cloths and mild soap—never polished or professionally refinished unless recoating.
