Field Watch

/PHONETIC/

Durable military-inspired watch featuring high-contrast dials, large numerals, luminescent markers, and robust construction for outdoor use.

A field watch is a military-inspired watch designed for legibility, durability, and simplicity. The classic field watch has a 36 to 40 mm case, a clean dial with Arabic numerals, a canvas or leather strap, and nothing more than hours, minutes, and seconds. The design descends from watches issued to soldiers in both World Wars, where readability under pressure was the primary concern. Hamilton's Khaki Field line is the most direct descendant of the original military field watch.

Frequently asked.

What makes a watch a field watch?

Field watches feature high-contrast dials with Arabic numerals and luminous markers for maximum legibility, durable cases (often 38-42mm), simple reliable movements, and utilitarian design. Originally made for military use, they emphasize functionality over luxury with robust, no-nonsense construction.

Are field watches water-resistant?

Most field watches offer moderate water resistance (50-100m/5-10 ATM) sufficient for rain and splashes. While not dive watches, their military heritage means decent weather protection. Modern field watches often exceed original military specs, with some offering 200m+ water resistance.

What size should a field watch be?

Traditional field watches measure 36-40mm for comfortable all-day wear and functional legibility. Modern versions range 38-42mm. They should feel substantial but not bulky, designed to be worn over clothing or under a sleeve without catching. Lug-to-lug distance matters more than diameter.
