Wrist Shot
A photograph of a watch worn on the wrist, typically used in reviews and social posts to show scale, fit, and how the piece actually sits day to day, as opposed to a studio product shot.
Adjusted (Positions)
A claim that a movement has been regulated to maintain accuracy across multiple physical orientations, such as dial up, dial down, and crown up, rather than just one resting position.
Piece Unique
A one-of-a-kind watch, commissioned or created as a single example rather than part of any production run, often built to a specific client's request or for a special occasion.
Drilled Lugs
Lugs with a small hole drilled through them, allowing a spring bar to be pushed out from the side without needing to lever it out from the case, making strap changes faster and reducing the risk of scratches.
Tantalum
A rare, dense, blue-grey metal occasionally used in high-end watch cases for its resistance to corrosion and distinctive dark, textured surface. Notably heavier than steel.
Aventurine Dial
A dial made from or coated in aventurine glass, a material embedded with fine copper or metal particles that catch light like scattered stars against a deep blue or green base.
Mother-of-Pearl Dial
A dial made from the iridescent inner shell layer of oysters or other molluscs, prized for its natural shimmer and the fact that no two dials share exactly the same pattern.
Meteorite Dial
A watch dial cut from a cross-section of an iron meteorite, showing the distinctive crystalline Widmanstätten pattern that forms only through millions of years of slow cooling in space.
Wandering Hours
A time display where the current hour is shown by a numbered disc that rotates into position beneath a fixed arc marking the minutes, rather than by conventional hour and minute hands.
Heart Cam / Coeur
A heart-shaped cam used in chronograph mechanisms to reset the central chronograph hand instantly to zero. Distinct from the spiral-profiled snail cam used in striking mechanisms.
Snail Cam
A spiral-profiled cam used in striking mechanisms like minute repeaters. Its stepped radius determines how many times a hammer strikes to indicate the hour or quarter.
Case
The outer housing that contains and protects a watch's movement, dial, and crystal. Every other structural element, the bezel, lugs, crown tube, and caseback, is either part of or attached to the case.
Unpolished / Sharp
A case that retains its original factory edges, bevels, and chamfers, never having been buffed by a service centre. Highly prized among vintage collectors for preserving the watch's original proportions.
Holy Trinity
Industry shorthand for Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin, the three Swiss brands most consistently cited as the pinnacle of prestige and craftsmanship in haute horlogerie.
Sleeper
A collector's term for a watch considered undervalued or overlooked relative to its quality, rarity, or historical significance, often expected to eventually gain wider recognition and appreciate in value.
Full Set
A watch sold with all of its original accessories: box, papers, warranty card, and often extras like tags, links, and the original purchase receipt. A stronger claim than box-and-papers alone.
Grande Complication
A watch combining multiple major complications in a single movement, traditionally requiring at minimum a chiming mechanism, a chronograph, and a calendar complication together.
Alarm Complication
A complication that produces an audible sound at a pre-set time, distinct from a repeater or sonnerie, which chime on demand or automatically on the hour. Rare in modern watchmaking.
Modular Movement
A movement built by adding a functional module, such as a chronograph, on top of a separate base calibre. Contrasted with an integrated movement, designed as a single unit from the outset.
Cam-Actuated Chronograph
A chronograph mechanism that uses a cam and lever system, rather than a column wheel, to control the start, stop, and reset functions. Generally more affordable to produce, though considered less refined.
Établisseur
A French term for a watch brand that assembles its watches from movements and components bought from outside suppliers, rather than manufacturing them in-house. The direct counterpart to a manufacture.
Silicon
A non-metallic element used in modern hairsprings and escapement components for its resistance to magnetism and temperature change. Not to be confused with silicone, the rubber-like polymer used in straps.
Ghost Bezel / Faded Bezel
An aluminium bezel insert that has faded from UV exposure over years of wear, most often black turning to a soft grey. Highly prized among vintage sport-watch collectors.
Cyclops Lens
A small magnifying lens set into a watch's crystal directly above the date window, typically magnifying the date by around 2.5 times to improve legibility.
Salmon Dial
A dial finished in a warm pink-to-orange hue, ranging from a subtle blush to a deeper copper tone. Currently one of the most sought-after dial colours in collecting circles.
Panda Dial
A chronograph dial in a light colour with contrasting dark sub-dials, resembling a panda's face. The reverse — dark dial with light sub-dials — is called a reverse panda.
Solar Steel
A 100% recycled stainless steel produced by Swiss supplier Panatère, melted using a concentrated solar furnace instead of an electric one. The process cuts its carbon footprint to roughly 165 times less than conventional steel, and it's the material behind Pragma's P1 – Perseverance case.
Lume Shot
Collector slang for a photograph of a watch taken in darkness to show the glow of its luminous material on the dial and hands.
Daily Wearer
A watch suited to and regularly worn as an everyday timepiece, prioritising comfort, durability, and versatility over specialisation or preservation.
Beater Watch
A collector's term for a watch worn for everyday activities where damage is likely — valued for its practicality rather than preserved as a collector's piece.
Service / Overhaul
The periodic maintenance process in which a watch movement is fully disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, adjusted, and reassembled by a watchmaker.
Vintage Watch
A watch generally considered to be at least 20–30 years old, typically valued for its historical significance, patina, and the character that age imparts.
Auction House
A specialist firm that facilitates the public sale of watches by competitive bidding, acting as an intermediary between sellers and buyers.
Integrated Bracelet
A bracelet designed as a single continuous unit with the watch case, with lugs and first links forming a seamless visual and structural transition.
Mesh Bracelet
A watch bracelet constructed from interlocked metal links in a fine woven pattern, offering flexibility and a distinctive soft texture on the wrist.
Squelette
The French term for a skeletonised watch movement, in which material is removed from the plates and bridges to reveal the working components beneath.
Applied Indices
Hour markers made as separate three-dimensional pieces that are individually attached to the dial surface, rather than printed or painted on.
Matte Dial
A dial with a non-reflective, flat surface finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, associated with legibility and understated elegance.
Sunburst Dial
A dial with a brushed radial finish that radiates from the centre, creating a dynamic light-catching effect that changes with viewing angle.
Enamel Dial
A watch dial made from powdered glass fused to a metal substrate at high temperature, producing an exceptionally hard, luminous surface.
Regulation
The process of adjusting a movement's rate to run as close to correct time as possible, typically by altering the effective length of the hairspring.
Power Reserve Indicator
A complication that displays how much energy remains in the mainspring, indicating how long the watch will continue running before it needs winding.
Shock Absorber
A spring-mounted bearing system that protects the balance wheel's delicate pivot from damage caused by impacts and drops.
Remontoir
A secondary spring mechanism that isolates the escapement from variations in mainspring torque, delivering a constant force to the oscillator.
Pallet Fork
The lever in a Swiss lever escapement that engages the escape wheel and transfers impulse to the balance wheel to sustain its oscillation.
Isochronism
The property of a balance wheel oscillating at a consistent frequency regardless of the amplitude of its swing or the tension remaining in the mainspring.
Pre-Owned Market
The secondary market for used or previously owned watches, spanning auction houses, dealer networks, and peer-to-peer platforms.
Flipping
The practice of buying a watch — often a sought-after reference at retail — and immediately reselling it for a profit on the secondary market.
Waitlist
A queue maintained by authorised dealers for watches whose demand significantly exceeds supply, most commonly associated with Rolex.
Leather Strap
A watch strap made from animal hide, typically the most common strap type on dress and formal watches.
Perlon Strap
A breathable, woven nylon mesh strap with a continuous weave that allows the buckle to fasten at any position along its length.
Lacquer Dial
A watch dial finished with multiple layers of lacquer, typically producing a smooth, deeply coloured surface with a subtle sheen.
Free-Sprung Balance
A balance wheel whose rate is adjusted via small masses on the wheel itself rather than a regulator arm on the hairspring.
Côtes de Genève
A decorative finishing technique applying parallel wave-like stripes to the flat surfaces of movement plates and bridges.
Stop-Seconds (Hacking)
A mechanism that halts the balance wheel when the crown is pulled out, allowing the seconds hand to be stopped for precise time-setting.
Grail Watch
A collector's term for the single watch they most desire — the one they would consider the ultimate addition to their collection.
Independent Watchmaker
A watchmaker who designs, produces, and sells watches outside the structure of large corporate groups, typically in very limited numbers.
