Breva Genève stands at the cutting edge of horology, pioneering an entirely new genre of mechanical watches that do more than tell the time—they interact with the environment. Founded in 2010 by Vincent Dupontreué, Breva’s mission is to combine the romance of traditional Swiss watchmaking with the functional utility of advanced scientific instruments. The result is a collection of mechanical timepieces capable of measuring altitude, barometric pressure, humidity, and air speed, all without electronics.

The idea behind Breva was born during a ski trip in the Alps, where Dupontreué became fascinated by the idea of wearing a timepiece that could also track weather and altitude changes—without relying on batteries or digital components. This vision led to the development of Breva’s groundbreaking Genie collection, which launched with the Genie 01 in 2013. It was the first-ever mechanical wristwatch with a fully functional barometer, giving wearers real-time weather forecasting capabilities on their wrists.

Breva followed with the Genie 02, equipped with a mechanical altimeter designed for mountaineers, pilots, and adventurers. It measured elevation using an aneroid capsule system—a miniature, sealed chamber that expands and contracts with changes in air pressure. Unlike quartz-based altimeters, Breva’s system required delicate mechanical calibration, housed in a robust titanium or gold case with transparent sapphire elements revealing the intricate mechanics inside.

In 2015, Breva released the Genie 03, the world’s first mechanical watch with a functional speedometer—using air pressure to calculate wind speed or ground speed when cycling or skiing. All of these complications were developed in partnership with master watchmakers and engineers in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, where the brand is based.

What distinguishes Breva is not just its innovation, but its commitment to pure mechanical ingenuity. All complications are analog and manually wound, often protected by patented systems to ensure shock resistance and atmospheric accuracy. The visual design of Breva watches embraces transparency and depth, often exposing the environmental sensors and their associated gearing through openworked dials and domed sapphire crystals.

Despite its relatively short history, Breva has already carved out a unique niche in haute horlogerie, appealing to collectors who seek both adventure-ready tools and avant-garde mechanical design.
